12:08 pm - Rad Organization Hiring Educators
Global Action Project, where I work in NYC, is hiring a few media educators. Feel free to ask questions in the comments section here.

Global Action Project, Inc. (G.A.P.), an award-winning youth media arts organization based in New York City, seeks part-time media educators to join our vibrant Urban Voices programs. Committed to social justice, our mission is to provide youth with the knowledge, tools and relationships they need to create powerful, thought-provoking media on local and international issues that concern them and to use their media as a catalyst for dialogue and positive social change. G.A.P.’s programs combine a dynamic mix of video production, media literacy, youth leadership and popular education.

Job Description: G.A.P. is looking for dedicated, experienced and enthusiastic media educators to co-facilitate one or more of our Urban Voices programs, which are after-school for youth ages 13-21. Programs typically run twice a week and candidates must commit to conducting programs from October 2007 to June, 2008 for an average of 10-15 hours a week. Responsibilities include curriculum development, workshop planning and preparation, guiding youth through a rigorous media production cycle, and documentation/assessment. Media educators are required to attend all staff development retreats and workshops, as well as program support sessions with the Program Director and weekly staff meetings.

Qualifications: Media educators must demonstrate a willingness and an ability to engage with G.A.P.’s dynamic curriculum and pedagogical approach, which connects youth leadership to social justice and to media analysis and production. Strong facilitation and co-facilitation skills are essential as is a demonstrated commitment to the individual, social and intellectual development of youth. Media educators must have working experience with digital video production and editing and a commitment to the aesthetic quality of their work.

Ideal candidate: The ideal candidate will be passionate about the use of media by youth for creative expression, education, activism and social change, knowledgeable about local/global social issues, and experienced in alternative educational methods, and youth development best practices. Commitment to social justice, youth empowerment; intergenerational learning and cultural engagement through media is essential. Should be comfortable in a collaborative, creative work environment with a diverse staff and youth community. Strong administrative/time management skills and a sense of humor greatly appreciated!

Part-time positions to start October 1, 2007 and end on the last week of June 2008. Applicants must be able to commit to attending the Staff Training Retreat on the following dates: October 10 – 12 and October 15 – 17, 2007. Please be prepared to bring a reel of your own media work and media produced with youth to the interview. Do NOT send work samples at this time.

Compensation: Salary is $26/hour for program and prep and $22/hour for staff meetings.

G.A.P. is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to a diverse workplace; LGBTQ, women, people of color and other under-represented communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
