02:17 pm - Teaching Disney?
I am teaching Media Criticism this quarter and Wednesday's class reading is on ideology in Disney movies.

I was thinking about bringing in some clips and analysis from "How to Read Donald Duck" but I'm not really sure how to "teach" this subject in a way that isn't just haranguing them with leftism. The easy answer is bring in clips from Aladdin or whatever and have them critique in-class, but I'd like to do something a little more eye-opening. The history of Disney with American imperialism is SO rich and SO interesting that I'd love to focus on that. Any ideas?

My kids are mostly juniors (in college) & smart, so sophistication is not a problem.

I remember reading a great essay about "The Little Mermaid"--in fact I think there's some great stuff re: that movie, especially its depiction of Ursula as a kind of drag queen. Honestly, though, this was YEARS ago, and I cannot remember what the name of the essay was or even who wrote it (though the drag queen thing should make it easy-ish to locate).

I've done a critiquing cartoons unit with high school english classes. One thing we did that might crossover well to a college class is looking at the depiction of Native Americans in Peter Pan and Pocahantas, and then comparing Pocahantas to the real story of Pocahantas. Pocahantas was widely and positively received as portraying Native Americans in a more realistic light which is clearly visible when comparing clips from the two movies. And then we look at why the myth of Pocahantas rather than the reality of Pocahantas is still promoted and the way it serves to support white supremacy.

kinda off topic, but I love Michael Sorkin's take on Disneyland in his anthology Variations on a Theme Park.. not sure if you want to go to Disney the place.
